Grand Park Event Receives Economic Impact Award in Sports Tourism

Westfield, IN – Today the City of Westfield and the Indiana Fire Juniors (IFJ) soccer club received national sports tourism award.  IFJ’s Crossroads of America College Showcase, produced in cooperation with Grand Park Sports Campus and the City of Westfield was named a 2018 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism by Sports Destination Management.

“We built Grand Park to be an economic driver for our city and this recognition not only validates our strategy but celebrates the contributions and partnerships we have created with organizations like Indiana Fire Juniors,” said Westfield Mayor Andy Cook. “It is a great accomplishment to present a world-class event at Grand Park, a world-class facility.”

“The Crossroads of America College Soccer Showcase is more than 20 years old and one of the top showcase events in the country for youth soccer players and their recruitment to play at the next level,” said John Simmonds Indiana Fire Juniors Tournament Director.  “The event has become larger and more successful, due to the partnership with the City of Westfield and Grand Park.  The event now hosts 632 boys and girls teams on back to back weekends in April with more than 300 college coaches in attendance, as well as Division 1 college games highlighting the evenings.”

Sports Destination Management, the leading publication with the largest circulation of sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market. This year’s winners are responsible for contributing more than $700 million to the national economy over the past year.

The Crossroads of America College Showcase has become the “premier showcase in the Midwest.” More than 5,000 athletes and 35,000 spectators attended this year. This is significant when considering Westfield’s population is approximately 40,000.  Roughly 70 percent of the showcase teams traveled from other states, with average daily visitor spend tracked at $106. The three-day event required more than 280 volunteers to stage and present successfully. The Crossroads of America was also awarded the 2017 Indiana Youth Soccer Tournament of the year.
